A new student mural has begun in Elmira and is set to be completed by June 5.
Taught by art teacher Emily Solometo, around 20 Ernie Davis Academy 9th grade students are able to participate in a new semester-long course called “Creative Arts.” The class examines symbolism in art and murals as a method of community education, civic engagement, and aesthetics. Students have researched, created and designed a mural inspired by the spirit, character, and accomplishments of Ernie Davis, the school’s namesake. The mural is being painted on the East side of New York Sport and Fitness on Water St.
Today, May 16, is Coaches Appreciation Day!
"I wanted to take a minute to thank you to all of our coaches for hard work and dedication to Express student-athletes. Today is Coaches Appreciation Day, so thank you, for all the long hours, in and out of the season. Thank you for helping to mold our athletes not only to better players, but to be better young adults. We know you don’t coach for the recognition, but today we say THANK YOU!! Tom Morrell Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics

NYS Changes to required physical examinations and dental certificates
Parents/guardians – please take note: New York State has changed the grades for required physical examinations and dental certificates. Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, all students must submit documentation of a physical exam and a dental exam when they first enter the district (all PreK students, some Kindergartners, any kids in older grades who move into the district) and in grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. If you have a child entering any of these grades in the fall, please contact your healthcare provider and dentist to schedule an appointment. If your student has had a physical or dental exam on or after Sept. 1, 2017, that exam may be used for the 2018-19 school year.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
Everywhere you look in the Elmira City School District it seems as if there is construction taking place. We are excited to see lots of work happening in most of our buildings. We have made lots of progress as we work towards new playgrounds at our elementary schools, upgrades in the auditoriums at Broadway Academy and Elmira High School, and necessary roofing and pavement throughout the district. Our construction crews are very busy making sure they have everything ready to go for September.
