Spookily Fun – and Safely Done: Halloween Tips for Students & Families

As the pumpkins glow and costumes take shape, Halloween is a night of fun, creativity, and community. At Elmira City School District, we want all of our students, families and staff to enjoy the festivities while staying safe. Below are key tips to keep in mind, whether you’re trick-or‐treating, attending a party or handing out candy at home.

Costume & Visibility

* Choose costumes that fit properly: avoid long trailing fabric, baggy sleeves or hems that might cause trips or falls.

* Add reflective tape, stickers or glow-sticks to bags and costumes so children are more visible to drivers.

* Wear comfortable shoes.

Trick-or-Treating

* Plan a route ahead of time and stick to familiar, well-lit neighborhoods.

* Use sidewalks when available. When walking on the road, walk facing traffic and stay as far left as practical.

* Cross only at intersections or marked crosswalks. Make sure children stop, look left-right-left, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping off the curb.

* Don’t let children go inside strangers’ homes or into cars for treats. Visit only homes with their porch lights on.

Candy & Decorations

* Wait until you’re home to eat any treats: check packaging, discard anything open or unwrapped.

* If you’re decorating your home: remove tripping hazards outside, keep walkways clear, and make sure any candles, decorations or cords are safely positioned.

Driving & Community Awareness

* If you’re driving while trick-or-treaters are out, slow down, turn on headlights early, and expect children to appear from between parked cars or from sidewalks.

* As community members and hosts: ensure your walkway is lit, decorations aren’t blocking paths, and you’re prepared to greet visitors safely.

For Older Students & Teens

* Establish clear check-in times, map routes ahead and remind them to travel in groups.

* Carry a flashlight or phone with a light; avoid dark costumes that make you hard to see.

HAVE FUN!
