Black History Month

Black History Month

Black History MonthOver the next four weeks of February, schools across the District will focus on aspects of Black history and culture as well as recognize the many ways in which Black people have contributed to, inspired and created American culture while also leading the way in advocating for justice.

Black History Month is an excellent time to remind young people of their power to be change agents. At Broadway Academy, seventh grade students are creating posters with their favorite quotes from influential Black people, Broadway Elementary and Broadway Academy music students are currently working on compositions by Darryl Johnson II, an African American composer, Diven students will ‘read their hearts out’ with guest readers from Corning Incorporated, field trips are planned to the John W. Jones Museum in Elmira, and many social studies projects are planned throughout the month.

"Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education." Martin Luther King, Jr.
